Wikimedia Canada in French?

Oh my God, I'm so glad that Wikimédia Canada finally exists! I think it's been years that I'm translating pages in French, in an entity (meta) who had no lawful reason ... although I enjoyed translating META pages all this time, but it's not like "THE" real thing.

If I may, I would LOOOVE to participate in the development of a Canada wide entity in French! Many of you have indicated your desire to build the organization in two languages, and I am here to give you a hand. In any cases, be assured that I am very very happy that Wikimedia Canada exists and I can't wait to work with you in this direction.

Sincerely, Antaya 00:14, 13 February 2011 (MST)

Wonderful. We are very happy to have you join us. Having a bilingual projects keeps us Canadian :-) --Doc James 19:38, 22 February 2011 (MST)
If this were Facebook I would be looking for the "Like" button. Eclecticology 14:06, 23 February 2011 (MST)
Just want to let you know that Wikimedia Switzerland is running under 4 languages, and even the left side menu is changing depending of the browser language! I think it would be great to have this add-on here. Thank you. Antaya 19:32, 24 February 2011 (MST)

Spam

Looks like the spam has arrived. Do we need to add further measures to deal with it?--Doc James 00:25, 11 March 2011 (EST)

I add it this morning on to-do list

Do we have a system to warn and then suspend or delete members who spam?
Htmlvb 17:01, 24 April 2011 (EDT)

Not really. The professional spammers that plagued us for a while have been dealt with by technical means, and the problem has not returned. Until this becomes a serious problem it is just as well to rely upon the good judgement of the administrators. Eclecticology 20:09, 24 April 2011 (EDT)

Participants

Hello! I just wanted to mention that due to the Berlin conference this week, I updated the list of volunteers for Wikimedia Canada. I removed all contributors who have been banned / duplicate / inactive for more than 2 years. So all these contributors on this list are still active and may be interested in participating in Wikimedia Canada and/or become membres. Note that all these people would be willing to help us with our projects. Have a nice conference boys! Antaya 23:59, 20 March 2011 (EDT)

Wiki Canada vs Wikimedia Canada

Is the Wiki Canada name temporary (until it becomes Wikimedia Canada) or will Wiki Canada have a broader mission? (To support all Wiki-related activities in Canada, including Wikimedia projects). Thanks! --Marclaporte 18:43, 21 March 2011 (EDT)

The current plan is to keep the name Wiki Canada as our official name, but to refer to ourself as Wikimedia Canada to the public. I'm told that this saves us from some potential legal headaches. As far as I know, all of the projects that we are currently planning will operate under the Wikimedia Canada banner, and there is no need to have a second brand name for now. Jeffery Nichols (Arctic.gnome) (talk) 19:31, 21 March 2011 (EDT)
These are all delicate issues, with traps on all sides. At the core I agree with Jeff, and with two underlying realities: 1) Our mission is deeply rooted in what the Wikimedia Foundation stands for, and 2) We are a Canadian legal entity with legitimate Canadian interests in a Canadian legal context. Eclecticology 19:46, 21 March 2011 (EDT)
To be a charity in Canada we must have complete autonomy over our fiances thus as Jeff has said we are using Wiki Canada to fulfill this requirement. To use "Wikimedia Canada" as an operational name we will have an ongoing legal agreement with Wikimedia Inc. This will be in the chapters agreement. --Doc James 22:22, 21 March 2011 (EDT)

Online meetings - larger participation lists

Moving forward we are going to need an online meeting strategy that serves us better than ad-hoc Skype meetings. In the IT Sector I have seen two main types of conferences take place, the teleconference where you call in by phone and the Webex style Webconference. Here are my thoughts on the two options:

  • Teleconference
Typically less expensive to host
Does not allow sharing of text information, links or video
Does not support video conferencing
Can be difficult to see who is speaking. This could be an issue for taking votes and meeting minutes.
  • Webconference
Costs about $50.00 / month for up to 25 users
Supports up to 500 participants, but at additional cost not known at this time.
Participants can use web cams, you can see who you're speaking with.
More visual management of participants, easier for meeting chair to unmute when it's a person's turn
Content can be shared with all participants during the meeting. Links to sites, documents and photographs.
Votes are easily counted and who is voting is more easily identified.
Telephone call in is supported for individuals who do not have a computer handy
Mobile phones supported through web interface
WebEx offering
Wikipedia comparison chart of options

As we get bigger we may need something like the web conference. One option would be to use both skype and google docs at the sometime. This would allow both typing and speech. I think it will highlight users by color now.--Doc James 04:47, 27 March 2011 (EDT)

As much as possible, decisions are best made on wiki. This helps to avoid confusion about just what we are agreeing to. Eclecticology 18:11, 27 March 2011 (EDT)
We may be able to get funding from the WMF to cover some costs for webconferencing tools. Alan will be looking into this. But yes agree discussion here is best before any discussions are made.--Doc James 15:37, 28 March 2011 (EDT)

Pls correct my English

Because I am French, my English writing may contain misspellings. If you have a few seconds, could you read these pages and adjust if necessary? From time to time I'll add pages to fix. Thank you in advance.

Monuments in Canada

Should we consider creating a project to capture photographs of monuments in Canada? At the WK 2011 conference there was much discussion about how this has been fun and successful in Canada. This is called Wiki Loves Monuments. There was also some mention of a similar project initiative in New York. Top level content category on commons

I don't oppose a lot of these ideas, but in this first building year we need to avoid stretching the leadership too thin. It's more important to develop participation in the local communities. It all needs to be fun for whoever is doing it. Eclecticology 14:53, 26 March 2011 (EDT)
As an organization would support this. If someone wishes to run with it that would be great.--Doc James 04:41, 27 March 2011 (EDT)
I recently raised the issue over at the Commons on the Wiki Loves Monuments 2011 talk page. Although there was some aprehension expressed at the thought of expanding the concept outside Europe, people generally seemed open to the idea. I would very much like to get this going. --Skeezix1000 13:00, 8 September 2011 (EDT)
Please see Projects/Wiki Love Monuments. --Skeezix1000 12:44, 21 October 2011 (EDT)

Encourage creation of more Aboriginal Wikipedias

We currently have a number of native language Wikis including Cree [1] --Doc James 01:05, 26 March 2011 (EDT)

For your information, there is also the (inactive) Inuktitut Wikipedia. Currently it contains text in both Latin script and Syllabics. I made a conversion script that will probably be enabled next month. Then the Wikipedia will be cleaned up and then it can be promoted among Inuktitut-speaking people. Presentation file

Hey there...

Can we consider that presention file is ready for a PDF transclusion?

Special thanks to Ray. Antaya 14:47, 16 April 2011 (EDT)

Well, with all those answers, I guess this translated document is ready to be transclude in PDF, then upload on the server? Please take 2 minutes to double check if this doc is ready to be publicied. Thank you. Antaya 23:34, 18 April 2011 (EDT)
D'accord. Naturellement je ne peux pas resister la tentation de faire encore des petits changements. Pense tu que les deux portions du texte sur les licences libres pourraient être ensemble sur la même page? Eclecticology 04:09, 19 April 2011 (EDT)
Please have Jeffrey sign off on it before including the English version.
Eclecticology 00:26, 20 April 2011 (EDT)

Why we exist as a corporation

Our mission on the front page is in rather complicated language. Wondering if the use of the following simplified version may be useful in places?

  1. To increase the involvement of Canadians in the Wikimedia movement
  2. To be an entity from which the movement can form collaborative relationships with other organizations
  3. To act as an official spokesperson for the movement
  4. To give Canadian donors tax benefits for their donations

--Doc James 21:55, 2 June 2011 (EDT)

When I looked at the previous mission and how they should impact the Official launch and press release article they seemed a bit abstract. The mission Doc James suggests are more tangible. Tenbergen 06:51, 3 June 2011 (EDT)

Linked in

Not sure if this is how you guys do stuff, so if making a page is not the way then someone please educate me.

I checked for Wikimedia Canada on LinkedIn today. Several other national chapters have groups, there isn't one for us yet. Might be a good way to make more people aware of us.

Having said that, I don't know much about LinkedIn or how to make groups there. Tenbergen 22:17, 3 June 2011 (EDT)

Neither do I. --Doc James 16:16, 12 June 2011 (EDT)
Excellent Idea, I created the group. Alan.ca 00:51, 16 June 2011 (EDT)

Side menu - Volunteer

Hi there! For some reason, I'm having hard time to translate the "Volunteer" link in the sidebar. Even so the Volunteer-url/fr is okay, the sidebar doesn't take it, and it's the only one how react like this (see all menu pages here)... do I have a cache problem. Thanks in advance for your hand. Antaya 09:54, 29 July 2011 (EDT)

Moving to WMF hosting?

Just a thought, but many chapters have wikis hosted on WMF (uk.wikimedia, nyc.wikimedia, etc). This might be good for us too, especially because of the spam problems we currently have at this location. Ajraddatz 13:55, 1 February 2012 (EST)

The spam problem has been annoying, but not overwhelming. As a legally autonomous organization it's important to have our sites in Canada, and under Canadian law. This may not make a big difference on this site which will primarily serve a function similar to that of Meta. It will make a difference on some other potential sites where material is more easily posted under Canadian copyright law. Eclecticology 18:37, 1 February 2012 (EST)

Wikipedia in Mi'kmaq

Good day, just a note to let you know that a new Canadian Wikipedia has been created. This is the Mi'kmaq Wikipedia (micmac). You can see it in the Incubator at [2]. Hopefully, it will become active enough to have his own Wikipedia soon.

Merci et bonne journée, Thanks you and have a good day, Wela'lin Amqui 11:40, 3 February 2012 (EST)

Excellent development. Eclecticology 16:32, 3 February 2012 (EST)

And it doesn't look like a lot of people is aware of it, but the Cree Wikipedia has been around for a while : [4]. We only need to get more involve with communities of each nations in order to see those wikis develop. Amqui 20:31, 6 February 2012 (EST)

Canadian Aboriginal Languages Wikipedia Coordination on Meta

Good day, I started a Canadian Aboriginal Languages Wikipedia Coordination page on Meta to coordinate the efforts on all small wikis in Canadian aboriginal languages. You are welcome to join and bring your suggestions. Thanks you, Welalin, Amqui (talk) 19:27, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

I think too we need to consider what to do about those languages where the number of speakers is too small to provide the critical mass of users that will make a Wikipedia in that language viable. This has come up for me with an old friend interested in the Klallam language. It has only 4 or 5 native speakers left. How can we best help in such circumstances? Eclecticology 19:56, 10 February 2012 (EST)
I understand the situation you are talking about. First, (don't quote me, it is my personal understanding of it) it's possible to create a Wiki in the Wikimedia's Incubator no matter how active it is and how many natural speakers it has if it's a real natural language (should have an ISO 639 code then). In those cases, the best way we can help it is to help set up this Incubator Wiki so the motivated speaker can start contributing with content. We have to understand that if there's only 4 or 5 speakers left, the Wiki will most likely stay in the Incubator for ever, but it's still accessible by everybody, so this is still a very positive thing for Wikipedia and the language itself). My personal advice in all those cases is to go forward despite the obstacles we may see, if the project works, then they won't have any other choices then to create the real Wiki. I read the Language Committee considers a Wiki active when it has three active contributors. I hope it answers your question and don't hesitate if you have anymore interrogation about the Wiki creating process or the Canadian Aboriginal Languages Wikipedia Coordination itself. If the Klallam language ends up with less than a dozen articles in the Incubator, it's still a success in my opinion. Amqui 14:00, 11 February 2012 (EST)
Thanks for the comment; all we have is personal understandings. My friend has clarified that it's Ditidaht (code dtd) instead of Klallam (code clm) that she has been working with. I had misinterpreted the implications of her residence at Becher Bay. Ditidaht is a bigger language; it has 8 speakers. :-) I don't know if separate Wikis are an answer for these small languages; we cannot assume that the remaining elders who still speak the language are also computer literate. On the reader side, few people are aware of incubator. Eclecticology 15:12, 11 February 2012 (EST)
I understand your worries about the accessibility and the publicity of the Incubator, that's something that had been discussed several times and you are welcome to bring your points about this on the Incubator talk page, especially if you have any ideas on how to improve it. As far as only one language per wiki, that's pretty much the rules of Wikimedia unfortunately, but there is work-around. For example, on the Wikipedia in Cree, there is different languages or dialects in the Cree language family and those will be incorporated in the same Wiki. So that's one solution there, create wiki for language family, i.e. for example, Ditidaht would be part of a Wakashan Wikipedia. That being said, I'm open to any suggestions you or your friend might have. Amqui 15:28, 11 February 2012 (EST)
I just saw your line, "we cannot assume that the remaining elders who still speak the language are also computer literate", and that's exactly the gap I intent to fill with Canadian Aboriginal Languages Wikipedia Coordination and perhaps support from this Chapter. I agree this is a big challenge, but I think every effort worth it. Amqui 16:55, 11 February 2012 (EST)

Ray, I know this is a pretty old conversation, but if you are still tracking it, and if your friend is still interested, there have been a lot of development in this regards on Wikimedia. So, ask him, and give him my contact information. We will create a Wikipedia in his language in the Incubator and provide him with the support he needs. Thanks, Amqui 22:04, 2 October 2012 (EDT)

Wikimedia Canada Outreach - Cuba

I have visited Cuba many times and each visit I am surprised by their limited access to Internet resources. A growing number of Cubans are gaining access to WiFi devices such as laptops and cell phones. I would like to start discussing the possibility of outreach by Wikimedia Canada to the Cuban people.

At this stage, I am not sure of the political risks associated with this idea or what assistance or barriers would exist with the Cuban government. So far here is what I have organized with respect to this idea:

1) I have a friend who is a lawyer from Colombian that speaks Spanish and has some skill in English and French. They are interested in assisting with understanding the laws in Cuba around this subject and acting as a delegate for talks with the Cuban government.

2) Benoit has mentioned that Wikimedia Switzerland has played a role in developing an inexpensive appliance that provides a read-only copy of Wikipedia and image thumbnails over WiFi.

3) Preliminary reading on Wikipedia, including these articles:

I would like to have some feedback on this idea as it is both political and unique for Wikimedia Canada.Alan.ca 03:54, 18 July 2012 (EDT)

I think there is a lot of potential for Cuban outreach, both on the content-creation side and the content-distribution side, although it might require a slight re-wording of our mission statement. We should should probably first get the approval of the WMF's lawyers to make sure we won't get them in trouble. If the WMF isn't allowed to support charities that do business in Cuba, we may have to separately incorporate Encyclopedians Without Borders. Jeffery Nichols (Arctic.gnome) (talk) 17:49, 21 July 2012 (EDT)
Because of the language Iberocoop should probably have the first chance at this. It would also help to have personal contact with someone in Cuba. Even if we ignore Cuba and the Dominican Republic there are excellent outreach opportunities for us in the small countries of the Caribbean. Whether we need to tweek our mission statement remains to be seen. Our financial independence is more important in such undertakings than the opinions of an Americn lawyer. "Wikipedians Without Borders" (or something similar) has a certain allure. Eclecticology 14:19, 22 July 2012 (EDT)

Useful links

The page in the title would need to be updated. It is linked from the main menu on the left of the screen. Amqui 22:01, 2 October 2012 (EDT)

Maybe we should do a bit of cleaning on Projects too. It would be best to separate past and current projects in my opinion. Amqui 22:06, 2 October 2012 (EDT)

Would it be technically possible to include mediawiki keywork in French in the software of Wikimedia Canada's website? For example [[Fichier:]] to insert pictures. Amqui 01:54, 10 February 2013 (EST)

JF Lepage

Admin

Good day, bonjour, où peut-on appliquer pour devenir admin sur le site de Wikimedia Canada, cela serait surtout pour pouvoir traduire les pages protégées (comme les nouvelles où il manque la dernière en français actuellement), where can I apply to become an admin on the Wikimedia Canada website, it would be mainly to be able to translate protected pages (like the news where it is missing the last one in french now) ? Thanks you, merci. Amqui 10:53, 13 August 2011 (EDT)

I guess not... Amqui 17:41, 15 August 2011 (EDT)
