Contribute to the sound map of the Wikimedia movement in Canada

The Sound Map Project aims to create a visual and audio representation of contributions to Wikimedia projects from the Canadian community. Anyone residing in Canada can take part in the language of their choice. All you have to do is send us a sound file describing your experience of participating in the Wikipedia, Wikidata, Commons and other projects. Deadline to send us the file: December 31, 2024.

This project is part of the website linked to the publication of the work Le mouvement Wikimédia au Canada : communautés, institutions et culture libre, to be published by Presses de l’Université de Montréal in 2025.

The recordings sent to us will be integrated into a map based on technology developed by OpenStreetMap.

How to participate

Please note that you can participate anonymously. Your name and username are not required.

  1. Record yourself in the language of your choice. You have a maximum of three minutes. See the procedure below.
  2. Send us your audio file and the requested information by e-mail to soundmap (at) wikimedia.ca. Please respect the format below.

Recording procedure

Use the voice recording application installed on your phone or computer to record the file (or any other software).

Leave two seconds of silence at the start of the recording, then :
1. Start by stating your geographical location (first your city, town or region, then your province or territory).
2. You can then answer one or more of the following questions: – To which Wikimedia project(s) do you contribute? – How did you start contributing? – What motivates you to contribute? – What are the main topics of your contributions? Etc.
Leave two full seconds of silence at the end of the recording.

Make sure that your file does not exceed 10 MB.

Format and information to be provided by e-mail

The file must be named as follows: Name of city/village/region + recording date (YYYYMMDD). Please omit accents, spaces and dashes (-), and respect the CamelCase principles: the first letter of each word should be capitalized (e.g. SaintPaulin).

Examples of file names: Winnipeg20241108, Ottawa20241109 or TroisRivieres20231107.

The e-mail should include contextual information (metadata) that will be associated with your testimonial:
– List the Wikimedia project(s) to which you contribute.
– List the language(s) in which you contribute.
– Your geographical coordinates (mandatory); full decimal coordinates can be obtained from coordonnees-gps, OpenStreetMap or GeoHack. Example: Winnipeg – 49.8955367,-97.1384584.

The license that will be applied to your recording is as follows: Creative Commons BY-SA 4.0.

Thank you for taking part in this project, and please tell other volunteers you know about it. We’re aiming for a rich and diverse sound map, just like the movement itself.
